Lisa Gibbons

Lisa portrait, bw, beautiful eyes

Born in Vancouver in 1967, Lisa Gibbons’ connection to nature started at an early age, when her parents relocated from Vancouver to Refuge Cove, on West Redonda Island. Living off the land, and water, in a small community of thirty people, Lisa and her family lived in a log house built by her father, where they assumed a life parallel to the early settlers of the area. The influences of this life ran deeply and informed her creative process.

Her passion for visual arts grew from these experiences, and she began a life-long discovery of giving artistic form to her personal vision. She studied at Emily Carr University in Vancouver and has been mentored privately under the direction of many renowned artists.

In addition to her artistic work, Lisa was one of the early community members at Hollyhock –  Canada’s Lifelong Learning Centre. Here, she and husband, Rex Weyler raised their two young sons and contributed to a thriving artistic, spiritual community.

She has also put her artistic pursuits into praxis as a foster parent, educational assistant for children with special needs with the Vancouver School Board, and after-school education and art programs for children.

Lisa’s style of work has developed into a mixed media art form, reflecting her environment, the lush coastal landscape of British Columbia, and honoring her connection with imagery from ancient cultures, their art, symbols, and universal archetypes. The themes of her work include the collective unconscious, honoring the wild and sacred, and finding ways to transcend merely human concerns. Her work incorporates watercolour, acrylic, drawing, collage, assemblage, encaustic, gold leaf, creating rich, textured and multi-layered surfaces.
